The United Nations Security Council has delayed a vote on sanctions against Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe.
The council was reportedly split over giving South African mediation efforts more time. Zimbabwe's ruling party and opposition began negotiations in South Africa on Thursday. The ZANU-PF and opposition Movement for Democratic Change had not talked to each other since President Robert Mugabe claimed victory in last month's widely condemned run-off election. MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out of the poll, citing violence against his supporters. Zimbabwe's UN mission has warned that a sanctions resolution against Zimbabwe's leadership could fracture the country in a way similar to Somalia.
