Merkel, Mubarak call for Lebanese presidential election ... co-chair the organisation with Sarkozy, urged Israeli and Palestinian leaders to reach a final peace deal. Shortly before the summit opened, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told reporters that Israel and the Palestinians have never been as close to peace as they are now. Over 40 leaders from Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa representing some 750 million people are in attendance.
