15.07.2008 - Czech press survey

If one carefully reads what Russian generals are saying, it is obvious what they have in mind: the radar must not be stationed anywhere close to the Soviet borderland.

This is the political line of the Soviet or Russian empire that still sees the world like from the maps of Cold War, Kambersky writes. Russians' considering the defence shield a threat is reminiscent of Czech ForMin yet to decide whether to resign over Cunek case ...

the Orwellian world in which "defence is attack" and "war is peace." Luckily, Czechs pay tremendous amounts for Russian petrol. If they no longer use the "oil pipeline of the friendship," Czechs can send petrodollars elsewhere, Kambersky writes. It is a good thing that the governments of Vaclav Klaus had predicted the Russian pressure in the 1990s and that Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek's cabinet does not hesitate to switch to the petrol from the Ingolstadt pipeline, a much more reliable device, he concludes. Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg must decide whether to keep backing the reputation of Jiri Cunek, Czech Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), with his impeccable moral image, Martin Zverina writes in Lidove noviny. However, Schwarzenberg has evidently only thought of how to make the outcome of the audit, checking Cunek's dubious finances, as much palatable to the public as possible, Zverina writes. In fact, Cunek does not deserve such a treatment at all. His latest explanations that he saved much money through per diem at official travels is beyond belief. The impact of the incomplete audit is devastating. After Cunek, it may make a laughing stock from another two senior representatives of the governing coalition. However, Schwarzenberg is much to blame, too, Zverina writes. Schwarzenberg's idea to make the private audit of Cunek's finances ought to have warned the public that a farce was being prepared, Pavel Verner writes in Pravo. If he were to fulfil his pledge that he will leave the government if it is proved that Cunek's finances are dubious, a single fact would have been sufficient, namely that Cunek was paid welfare benefits at the same time when he was able to save a million crowns, Verner writes. The case was absolutely clear and Schwarzenberg should not have waited a single moment. He ought to have said: Dear colleagues from the government, keep working with such a man, but without me, he adds.
