Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has rejected an accusation by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which says that he is is directly responsible for genocide in that country's Darfur region. Speaking on state television, al-Bashir said the accusation was based on lies and that the ICC had no jurisdiction in Sudan. Al-Bashir was speaking after ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo, said he had invited a panel of judges to review his request to indict the Sudanese leader.
Officials with a joint United Nations/African Union peacekeeping mission in Dafur have said that they fear the announcement could spark retaliation. They have announced plans to evacuate around 3,000 non-essential police and civilian staff from the country.
