The Czech Republic has been criticised over a too high number of children in institutional care in the long run. Some 20,000 children live in various institutions in the 10-million Czech Republic. According to the latest data from the Institute for Health Information and Statistics (UZIS), there were 33 infant homes for children under three years at the end of 2007, situated in all 14 regions, including Prague, except for the South Bohemian Region. On the contrary, the number of physiotherapists and other specialised employees in these institutions declined. Out of the children sent to infant homes last year, 47 percent were accepted for social reasons and one-third for health reasons. Both reasons played a role in about one-fifth of the cases. According to the UZIS, 24 percent of the children sent to infant homes came from Romany families, 20 percent were disabled and 3 percent were maltreated by their parents.
