German Chancellor Angela Merkel has begun a two-day visit to Algeria, her first official trip to the North African country. Merkel is being accompanied by a large business delegation, and discussions are expected to centre on boosting economic co-operation between the two countries.
Algeria is a leading gas supplier to the European Union, although Germany currently only imports one percent of its gas needs from there. Algerian media say increased military co-operation, including possible sales of German arms, will also be on the talks agenda.
