German Chancellor Angela Merkel has held talks with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on the second day of her two-day trip to the North African country.
Merkel put business interests at the focus of her visit to Algeria, which is the third-largest provider of natural gas to European markets. The Chancellor said that she wanted to establish a gas partnership with Algeria to diversify Germany's energy needs. She has also called for women's rights to be strengthed in the Islamist country. During Merkel's visit a German construction company has secured a contract worth around one billion euros to build the world's third-largest mosque in Algiers.
