British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has begun an unannounced visit to Israel and the West Bank.
British officials said Brown was to meet Israeli President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and senior ministers. He was then to travel on to the West Bank for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. Brown is expected to use his visit to stress the need for increased investment in the Palestinian territories. Earlier, Brown visited Baghdad to meet Iraqi leaders.
