Obama hopes to boost his security credentials, seen as the Achilles heel of his presidential bid. Obama wants up to 10,000 extra US troops in Afghanistan and a shift from what he said was the Bush administration's "single-minded" focus on Iraq. The United States currently has about 36,000 troops in Afghanistan. Obama is due to hold talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday. Afghanistan was the first stop on a major international tour. He is later expected to visit Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and Britain.
