News sources quote officials in South Ossetia as saying at least three people have been killed and seven injured in firefights in the Georgian separatist region.
Eduard Kokoity, leader of the self-declared republic, told reporters the attack was carried out by Georgian snipers. He called for a "serious and painful" reaction against Georgia, which accused South Ossetia late Thursday of a terrorist attack that injured six Georgian police officers.
