02.08.2008 - IOC grilled on Internet censorship at Beijing Olympics

The International Olympic Committee has acknowledged it might have been naive when it expected China to allow unfettered media access to the Internet during the Beijing Games.

IOC president Jacques Rogge said that under pressure, Chinese organizers had unblocked some sites at the main press center and venues, but that others remained censored for journalists covering the Summer Games. Rogge denied an admission by Kevan Gosper, the IOC press chief, that some Olympic officials had struck a deal with Chinese officials over internet control. Beijing has since reportedly unblocked a number of sites, including those of several international broadcasters, and Amnesty International.
